Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care Campus

This ambitious, 1,100,000 SF multiphase expansion campaign consists of the design and construction of eight new buildings including a new chilled water central plant, cogeneration plant, campus-wide steam and chilled water distribution system and two multi-level parking garages. The development includes several new programs for the VA, departing from the traditional VA Facilities Standards by introducing innovative design elements such as modular layouts, photovoltaic systems, water saving plumbing fixtures and cost-competitive roof top air handlers. Capital provided mechanical, plumbing, and medical gas system design in 3D modeling and documented fully in Revit, with the central utility plant modeled in 3D and documented in CAD-MECH.

The design effectively combines the strong, functionality and reliability-centric culture of the VA with highly efficient and sustainable design ethic, resulting in a facility which meets the stringent criteria of the VA as well as embraces new technology and thinking. Self generation and renewable energy are cornerstones of the systems thinking, so roofs are populated with solar photovoltaic system and solar thermal as well as the scalable cogeneration plant being developed as part of the project. Once completed, the sustainable design features will qualify each of the facilities to individually receive LEED Silver Certification by USGBC.
